Dr. Betsy Coe at Montessori
Dr. Betsy Coe, the American Montessori Society’s 2008 Living Legacy, gave an inspiring presentation to parents, faculty and staff members on November 16. Her visit was part of The Montessori School’s 50th Anniversary Speaker Series.
“Journey to Somewhere” was the theme for Dr. Coe’s presentation. She spoke about the goals of
Montessori education for our children, including academic preparation, confidence & competence, intrinsic motivation, creativity and originality of thought, social responsibility, and autonomy and independence. She also related how Montessori gives students the ability to “think outside the box,” a skill that is becoming more important for success in today’s world.
Dr. Coe also spoke about the importance of providing a “safe learning environment” for students, where mutual respect among peers and with teachers allows students to feel comfortable in the learning process and alleviates the fear of making mistakes.
